When I heard about the empty chair meme, I thought of this picture. I took it at my wife’s uncle’s house in July of 2007. We sat in old chairs under the shade of a young maple tree and listened to his stories of farming and work. He was elderly, a widower, and I didn’t know if I would see him again. As I got up to leave I took a picture of the empty chair. It seemed to capture what I was feeling.
But for today, it is the empty chair of America. Made of steel in some long closed American factory.
