Detroit Supermarkets

NPR had a segment on the difficulty people in Detroit have purchasing groceries. The problem is that there are no large supermarkets anywhere in the urban area. None. Zero. You have to be able to travel out to the ‘burbs to go shopping. So people are shopping in small stores and paying too much. The selections are poor and making choices to buy fresh vegetables and fruit are very limited. A genuine issue, but the report ignored what’s really happening to Detroit.

Supermarkets, of course, are businesses. If it’s not profitable, for whatever reason, they won’t do it. Any number of factors might make a supermarket close. Low sales, high insurance rates, taxes, robberies, inability to hire people willing to work at the location at reasonable rates, etc. In a dying city, business flee.

You can’t buy a Chrysler in Detroit either, the last dealer closed in 2009. You want to get a new Jeep? You have to drive out to Highland Park or Gross Point.

  1. As someone who lives close (too close) to Detroit I can vouch for that. It is quickly becoming the case that the only things worth going to in Detroit are sports stadiums and casinos.

  2. Excellent point, and NOT the first city to have that problem… Hell, DC has the same ‘issue’ in the less than stellar neighborhoods! And no, the media WON’T tell the true story!

The same thing is happening here in England. The St. Anne’s district of Nottingham is populated by largely immigrants on welfare support. Almost all of the stores there have closed because no-one purchased from them and the stores were always being robbed so the staff left. The empty premises are soon reduced to abject desolation by vandals and thieves.
Now it’s too dangerous to ride a bus that has come through St. Anne’s because it will have passengers from St. Anne’s. The disappearance of shops close to the District is now apparent. The desolation is spreading.
BTW, it’s my first visit here, I’ll return, that’s for sure.
